Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine:

Acupuncture and TCM is a comprehensive medical treatment with a long history that has matured over 3000 years. It has been emerging as an important modality of complementary medicine in the USA.

TCM and Acupuncture has developed a view that considers the whole person and how this person interacts with his or her environment. It is a holistic system which emphasizes the connection of mind, body and spirit.

Is acupuncture safe?

The FDA approved acupuncture from a licensed practitioner in 1996. Millions of people are being treated each year and very few complications have been reported to the FDA.

Acupuncture has a great safety records with a minor adverse event such as a local bruise being reported in about 0.1% or I in 1000 treatments.

How does it work?

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into the body at very specific locations. It has been showed that acupuncture stimulates the nervous and the endocrine system. The results have been confirmed to release different hormones in the body, such as endorphins, which activates the body’s opiate receptors, causing an analgesic effect to eliminate or decrease pain.

In addition, studies have shown that acupuncture may alter brain chemistry, helping the brain perceive and respond to pain; blocking the pain signals to the brain. Also included are reactions and processes that regulate a person’s body temperature, blood pressure, increasing blood flow by causing vasodilation to affected local injured tissue to help eliminate or reduce pain.

Acupuncture improves immunity, relaxes muscles and helps balance emotions.

The NIH consensus statement on acupuncture states the efficacy of acupuncture for headaches, migraine, tennis elbow, fibromyalgia, low back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, dental pain, stroke rehabilitation, post operative and chemotherapy nausea and vomiting.

 How does it feel like?

Most people find acupuncture to be greatly relaxing and some people are energized by a treatment. The hair-thin needles are solid (unlike drawing needles), sterile and disposable. A slight sensation might be felt upon insertion such as a distended, tingling or a pressure sensation.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments will vary from one person to another. Chronic conditions usually take longer than acute conditions. Some may need as many as 10 treatments.

What should I expect during my first visit?

The initial visit will consist of a thorough investigation about your health history and your current condition.

The Acupuncture physician needs to understand the working of your body in order to come up with an individualized treatment plan. This is the perfect time to ask questions and to address any concerns.
